Black Hole and the bag range

Bags are the largest part of what we hold. The Black Hole line is the recognisable one — ripstop polyester with a TPU laminate, welded seams and a burly zip, in duffels from 40 to 100 litres, wheeled versions of the same, packs, totes and the packing cubes that fit inside them. Terravia is the lighter, more technical range: hip packs, sacoches, tote packs and daypacks from 14 to 36 litres. Refugio daypacks cover commuting at 26, 30 and 32 litres, and the Atom Sling is the small crossbody.

Fleece, and what the names mean

Patagonia has been making fleece since the 1980s and the names have stuck. Better Sweater is the knit-face fleece that looks like a jumper, in jackets, vests, crewnecks and quarter-zips. Synchilla is the original heavyweight. Retro Pile and Classic Retro-X are the high-loft, shaggy ones. Micro D is the thinnest, for layering under a shell. Textured Fleece and the Snap-T pullover sit between. If you're choosing, it comes down to how much bulk you want and whether the fleece is the outer layer or a mid-layer.

Insulation and waterproofs

Nano Puff uses synthetic PrimaLoft insulation, which keeps working when damp — jackets, hoodies, vests and mitts. Down Sweater is the goose down equivalent, warmer for the weight but less forgiving when wet. On the shell side, Torrentshell 3L is the everyday waterproof, with Granite Crest and Boulder Fork above it, and the Triolet for harder conditions. Parkas run to the Stormshadow, Windshadow, Isthmus and the Tres 3-in-1.

The rest of the range

Responsibili-Tees are made from recycled cotton and polyester, carrying the P-6 logo, 73 Skyline and Boardshort Logo prints. Trousers cover the Twill Traveler chino, All-Wear and Point Reyes canvas GI pants, and the Funhoggers. Shorts run to Baggies and the Nomader volley. Accessories take in P-6 Label and Trad caps, Terrebonne hats and visors, a run of beanies, R1 and Retro Pile gloves, and the Tech Web and Friction belts.

Patagonia FAQs

Better Sweater has a knit face, so it reads more like a jumper than a fleece and works under a jacket or on its own. Synchilla is the original heavyweight pile fleece — warmer, bulkier and more obviously outdoor kit. Both are recycled polyester.
Patagonia's standard t-shirt, made from recycled cotton and recycled polyester rather than virgin fibre. The fit is regular and the fabric is midweight. It carries the P-6 logo and the seasonal graphics.
Nano Puff uses synthetic insulation, which keeps some warmth when damp and dries faster — the better choice for British weather or anything active. Down Sweater is warmer for its weight and packs smaller, but loses loft if it gets wet.
40 litres works as cabin baggage or a weekend bag. 55 litres covers a week. 70 and 100 litres are for longer trips or bulky kit, and both come in wheeled versions. The packing cubes come in 3, 6 and 14 litres and are sized to fit inside them.
Highly water-resistant rather than fully waterproof. The ripstop fabric has a laminate coating and the seams are welded, so they shrug off rain and wet ground, but the zips aren't sealed and they aren't built for submersion.
Regular through the body, with fleece and shells cut with room to layer. Baggies shorts run loose by design. Measurements are listed on each product page, and both shops hold Patagonia if you'd rather try something on.
