What's reduced in the Patagonia sale
Fleece is the bulk of it. The Classic Retro-X vest is the piece most people know Patagonia for — deep-pile fleece with windproof panels across the chest and shoulders, first made in the 1980s and barely changed since. The Textured Fleece Hoody sits alongside it as the softer, less structured alternative.
On the outerwear side, the Tres 3-in-1 Parka is the substantial one: a waterproof shell with a removable insulated jacket inside, so it works as three garments depending on the weather. The Isthmus Anorak is the lighter pullover shell. The Lightweight Insulated Fjord Flannel sits between a shirt and a jacket — flannel outer, insulation inside — which makes it the useful autumn layer here, and the tees cover the lighter end.
When Patagonia goes on sale
Patagonia discounts sparingly and does not run the routine seasonal promotions most outdoor brands do. Its argument is that the most sustainable garment is the one you already own, and it invests in repair rather than volume. What that means in practice is that reductions are end-of-season clearance rather than scheduled sale events, and that sizing thins out fast — there is no restock behind a reduced line.
If you want the brand at a lower price and are not fixed on a particular piece, the previous season's colourway of a continuing style is the reliable route. The Retro-X is a good example: the construction has not materially changed in decades, so an older colour is the same garment.
