About Karhu trainers

Karhu was founded in Helsinki in 1916, making javelins, discuses and skis from local birch before it made shoes. It took the name Karhu — Finnish for bear — in 1920 and adopted the bear as its logo. Through the 1920s and 1930s its spikes were on the feet of the Flying Finns, Paavo Nurmi among them.

The M you see on the side of every pair here is not decoration. It stands for Mestari, Finnish for champion, and Karhu adopted it in the 1960s to replace an earlier marking. It has been the brand's identifier ever since, which is why the shoes carry no wordmark on the upper.

Karhu Fusion trainers: 2.0, XT and XC

Fusion is the largest family here by some distance, running to fifteen of the thirty-three pairs across three variants. Most of what separates one Fusion from another in practice is the colour blocking, and Karhu is unusual in how far it pushes that — names such as Foggy Dew, Turbulence and Darkest Spruce are not marketing flourishes so much as accurate descriptions of quite specific greys and greens. If you want a trainer nobody else in the room is wearing, this is the family to look at.

Karhu Mestari, Aria 95 and Super Fulcrum trainers

The Mestari is the slimmest silhouette in the range and the most obviously retro — a low, narrow runner in suede and mesh, closer to a 1970s track shoe than to anything modern. There are seven here plus two Mestari Control. The Aria 95 and Legacy 96 take their names from the years they reference and sit somewhere between the Mestari and the Fusion in bulk. The Ikoni Trail is the only off-road pair on the page.

Mestari, the Finnish word for champion. Karhu adopted the M in the 1960s and it has been the only marking on its running shoes since — there is no wordmark on the upper, which is why Karhu trainers are less obvious than most.
Yes. Karhu used a three-stripe motif on its shoes through the 1940s and early 1950s. After the 1952 Helsinki Olympics it sold the trademark to Adidas for the equivalent of around 1,600 euros and two bottles of whisky. The M logo came in afterwards to replace it.
