The ranges sort themselves by where you'll carry them, which makes choosing easier than the number of options suggests. High Coast and Vardag are the town packs: plain, unstructured, no hip belt, because a hip belt on a bus is just something digging into you. They take a laptop and a day's things and they sit flat against your back rather than standing off it. Abisko is where that changes. Once a pack carries real weight, the belt has to move that weight onto your hips or your shoulders take all of it — which is fine for an hour and painful after four. Abisko packs do that properly, with a back system that adjusts to torso length rather than assuming everyone is the same height. Kajka, Keb and Bergtagen go further again, with frames that hold the load close and high, which is the difference between carrying a tent comfortably and being pulled backwards by it.

Travel and everyday carry

Färden is built on the assumption that baggage handlers are harder on a bag than a mountain is, and the fabric is heavier for it. The wheeled cases run on the same principle — you'll drag them over kerbs and gravel, not carpet. High Coast duffels are the lighter option for a weekend, and they pack down when empty, which matters if the bag has to live in a cupboard for eleven months of the year. At the small end, hip packs and pocket bags exist for the walk to the pub: phone, wallet, keys, hands free. They're worn across the chest as often as at the waist now, which Fjällräven has quietly accommodated by lengthening the straps.

What holds up

Most of these are G-1000 or heavy recycled polyester. Both wear rather than fail — a strap frays, a buckle scuffs, the colour goes flat where the sun hits it, but seams hold and zips keep running. G-1000 takes Greenland Wax if you want more water resistance, and the lid and base are where it counts, since that's where rain collects and where the pack meets wet ground. Worth being clear about the limits: none of these is waterproof. The fabric sheds water, the seams aren't taped and the zips aren't sealed, so a sustained downpour will find its way in eventually. A rain cover costs a fraction of the pack and solves it.

A High Coast Foldsack, Vardag 17 or Skule 24. All three are simple, unstructured packs cut for town rather than trails, and they take a laptop and a day's things without the hip belt and straps of a walking pack.
Volume and how the weight is carried. Hike runs 20 to 35 litres for day walks. Trek goes up to 65 litres with a proper load-bearing frame and adjustable back, built for multi-day routes where you're carrying a tent and food.
Back length, not pack volume. Larger packs come in two back sizes so the hip belt sits on your hips rather than your waist — S/M for shorter torsos, M/L for longer. Getting it right matters more than the litre capacity on anything you'll carry loaded.
Water resistant rather than waterproof. G-1000 and the recycled polyester shed rain, and G-1000 can be waxed for more, but seams and zips aren't sealed. Rain covers are sold separately in sizes matched to pack volume.
