The Filson Alaskan Guide Shirt and the flannels

The Alaskan Guide is Filson's best-known shirt and the reason most people arrive at the brand. It is a heavy brushed cotton flannel with a full cut through the chest and shoulders, two chest pockets and a long tail, designed to stay tucked when you reach. The lightweight version is the same shape in a thinner cloth, which is the more wearable of the two in a British winter unless you are actually outside in it. Alongside them sit the vintage flannel work shirt and the Twin Lakes sport shirt, both in plaid, both cut closer to a conventional shirt than the Alaskan Guide is.

Feather cloth, Rustic Oxford and the lighter shirts

Feather cloth is the summer answer: a lighter, closely woven cotton in plain earth colours rather than plaid, and the one to reach for when a flannel is too much. The Rustic Oxford is the one that works in an office — an oxford weave in indigo shades, so it has the depth of a chambray with the structure of a proper shirt, and it will fade rather than wear out. How Filson shirts are cut, and how to wear them

Filson generally drafts its shirts as a layer rather than a top — the heavier flannels are cut with room through the body and shoulders, on the assumption that something goes underneath and a jacket goes over. Worn on their own by someone used to a modern slim shirt, they will usually feel roomier than expected, so it is worth checking the measurements on the product page rather than ordering to your usual size. Heavy brushed cotton also softens considerably over a year of wear, so a shirt that feels stiff at first is not the shirt you will own in six months. Cool machine wash and line dry rather than tumble drying. Heavy brushed cotton is prone to shrinking in a hot wash or a dryer, and the brushed face flattens with heat, which is what takes the softness out of a flannel. They soften considerably over the first year of wear.
