Filson Headwear FAQs
A heavyweight cotton canvas finished with oil and wax. It sheds rain rather than soaking it up, blocks wind, and is difficult to tear. New tin cloth is noticeably stiff and softens with wear, taking the shape of whatever it is used on. The finish will wear thin at the creases over years of use.
A dense, heavy woollen cloth Filson has used since the 1890s. Its useful property is that it holds warmth when damp, where most fabrics stop insulating once wet. It is also quiet, which is why it stayed in use with hunters long after lighter synthetics arrived.
Both have a full brim rather than a peak, so both keep rain off the back of the neck. The packer hat has a shaped, stiffer brim that holds a curl at the sides. The bush hat is flatter and more relaxed, usually with vent eyelets in the crown. Either will take being crushed in a bag and come back into shape.
