Filson Bags FAQs
Both are heavy cotton canvas. Rugged twill is unwaxed, so it is lighter to handle and easier to live with day to day, but it is not weatherproof. Tin cloth has an oil-finish wax, so it turns rain and resists abrasion, and it starts stiffer. Rugged twill for a briefcase that lives indoors, tin cloth for a bag going outside.
The Original Briefcase is the flat, classic one, sized for a laptop and papers. The Tin Cloth Compact is smaller and waxed, so it handles weather. The 24-Hour has enough depth for an overnight change alongside work things. The Dryden is the lightest, in ballistic nylon rather than canvas, and the easiest to carry daily.
Tin cloth is water-repellent rather than waterproof — it will turn rain for a long time but is not sealed. The Dry range is different: those bags are designed for genuine immersion, which is why they look and feel unlike the rest of the range. Rugged twill is not weatherproof at all.
Both Yards Store shops carry the brand: 13 Old Bank Street in Manchester and 86 Pinstone Street in Sheffield. At these prices it is a range worth handling first, since the weight and the size are hard to judge from photographs. Ranges differ between the two shops, so ring ahead for a specific bag.
