Barbour was founded in South Shields in 1894 and is still headquartered there, family owned into its fifth generation. Its waxed jackets are still made and repaired at the Simonside factory in South Shields; other lines are produced elsewhere.
A tightly woven cotton impregnated with a paraffin-based wax. The wax fills the gaps between the fibres so water runs off rather than soaking through, while the cotton still breathes. It needs re-waxing every year or two as the finish wears.
Yes. Barbour operates a repair and re-waxing service at its South Shields factory, and takes in jackets that are decades old. Details are on Barbour's own website, and we can point you in the right direction in either shop.
