About Barbour

South Shields since 1894

John Barbour started selling oilskins from a shop on Market Place in South Shields in 1894, outfitting the sailors, dockers and fishermen working the mouth of the Tyne. The clothing was built for wind and salt water rather than fashion, and the waxed cotton that made the name came out of that. The company is still owned by the Barbour family, still based in South Shields, and still repairs and re-waxes jackets sent back to it — some of them decades old. It holds three Royal Warrants.

What waxed cotton actually is

Waxed cotton is a tightly woven fabric impregnated with a paraffin-based wax. The wax fills the gaps between the fibres, so water runs off rather than through, while the cotton itself still breathes. It is not a membrane and it is not sealed — a waxed jacket will keep out a downpour but it needs re-waxing every year or two as the finish wears thin at the cuffs, elbows and shoulders. That's maintenance rather than failure, and it's why a Barbour jacket can outlast several waterproof shells.

Buying Barbour at Yards Store

We stock Barbour across both shops and the website. Manchester is at 13 Old Bank Street and Sheffield at 86 Pinstone Street, and both hold the jackets, shirts and leather goods, though ranges differ between them. If you're looking for a particular jacket, size or tartan, it's worth calling ahead before travelling — Manchester on 0161 835 1211 and Sheffield on 0114 698 8085.
