What YETI is, and why the coolers cost what they do

Roy and Ryan Seiders started YETI in Texas in 2006 because the coolers they could buy kept failing on fishing trips — lids that cracked, hinges that broke, ice gone by the second day. The Tundra they designed instead went on sale in 2008, rotationally moulded in one piece rather than assembled from panels, with thick polyurethane insulation and a gasketed lid. That construction is the whole of the price difference: a moulded cool box has no seams to split and enough insulation to hold ice for days rather than hours, which matters if you are camping or on a boat and does not if you are carrying lunch to work.

YETI drinkware, from the Rambler to the Yonder

The Rambler line is the bulk of what we stock and the reason most people meet the brand — vacuum-insulated stainless steel in tumblers, bottles, mugs and travel mugs, with the same principle as the coolers applied at desk scale. The Yonder bottles are the exception: hard plastic rather than steel, lighter and cheaper, made for throwing in a bag rather than keeping coffee hot. Silo jugs handle volume, the shaker bottles are the gym end of the range, and the insulated food jars keep soup hot in the way a flask does. If you want something to hold heat all day, choose steel; if you want something light to carry water, the Yonder does that better.

YETI bags, packs and gear cases

Less well known and worth knowing about. The Skala hiking backpacks in 32 and 50 litres are a proper move into packs rather than a branded daybag, and the Panga is a submersible dry pack for boats and rivers. Crossroads and Cayo cover travel and everyday carry. The LoadOut GoBox cases are hard, sealed and stackable, made for tools and camera kit rather than clothes, and the Sidekick Dry is the small waterproof pouch for a phone and a wallet. None of this insulates — it is the dry and durable side of the brand rather than the cold side.

YETI FAQs

Yards Store carries YETI online and in both shops: 13 Old Bank Street in Manchester and 86 Pinstone Street in Sheffield. Ranges differ between the two, so ring ahead if you are after a specific cool box, colour or size. Everything on this page ships across the UK.
The construction. A Tundra is rotationally moulded in one piece rather than assembled from panels, so there are no seams to split, and the walls carry thick polyurethane insulation with a gasketed lid. That is what holds ice for days instead of hours. Whether it is worth it depends entirely on what you are doing with it.
Rambler is vacuum-insulated stainless steel, so it holds heat or cold for hours and weighs accordingly. Yonder is hard plastic, lighter and cheaper, and not insulated. Rambler for coffee and long days out, Yonder for carrying water.
