About Taion down jackets

Taion launched in Japan in 2016, and the name is the Japanese word for body temperature. It started as a production company rather than a fashion label, which is the useful part of the story: it already had the supply relationships for good down before it had a brand, and it used them to undercut what everyone else was charging.

The founder's own account is that lightweight down for layering cost around 30,000 yen at the time, and the idea was to make the same thing at a price people would actually pay. Inner down was barely a category then. It is one now, largely because of this.

Taion inner down: how it works and why it is thin

Inner down is built to go under something. It is cut close, with narrow baffles and no bulk at the shoulder, so a coat still fits over the top — which is the opposite of how most down jackets are made. The fill is 90% down to 10% feather, and the higher the proportion of down the more warmth you get for the weight.

The shells are high-density nylon taffeta with a water-repellent finish, and the stitching uses a thread chosen to stop feathers working their way out — the usual failure point on cheap down. Most pieces pack down small enough to live in a bag, which is the other reason people buy them.

Taion Military, Mountain and Work lines

The three lines differ in cut rather than in fill. Military is the plainest and closest-fitting, in V-neck and crew neck, and includes the reversible short pants and half-sleeve shirt. Mountain is the outdoor-leaning group, with the boa fleece vests and hooded jackets and the packable volume down jacket. Work is the heavier end — the corduroy crew neck, the W-Zip volume and Lib down jackets.

Several pieces are reversible, giving you two colourways in one garment, and the boa models pair a fleece front with a nylon back so they work as a mid-layer or on their own. The non-down pieces — the mesh vests, the reversible anorak and the military cardigan — are the warmer-weather alternatives in the same shapes.

Taion FAQs

A down jacket cut to be worn underneath a coat rather than as the outer layer. The baffles are narrower and the shoulders are less bulky than a standard down jacket, so a shell or overcoat still fits over the top. It also works on its own in milder weather, which is the point — one piece covering two jobs.
Body temperature, in Japanese. The brand launched in 2016 and took the name from the idea that clothing should regulate warmth rather than simply add it.
A 90% down and 10% feather blend. The higher the down proportion, the more warmth you get per gram, which is how the jackets stay thin. The shells are high-density nylon with a water-repellent finish, and the stitching uses a thread designed to stop feathers escaping — the usual weakness in cheaper down.
A deep-pile fleece, often on one face of a reversible piece with nylon on the other. It gives you a fleece and a shell in a single garment, and it is warmer to the touch than the down pieces without being warmer overall.
Taion is Japanese and sized accordingly, so it generally runs smaller than UK equivalents. The reversible and inner-down pieces are cut close by design, since they are meant to sit under a coat. Check the measurements on the individual product page rather than going by your usual size.
