About Fjällräven Mens Jackets & Parkas

Waxed or waterproof

Fjällräven takes two different views of rain, and understanding which one you're buying is most of the decision. The G-1000 jackets — Skogsö, Sten, Vardag, the Bergtagen G-1000 — arrive wind resistant but not waterproof, and you add the water resistance yourself with Greenland Wax. That sounds like a shortcoming until you've owned one: the fabric breathes when you leave it unwaxed, sheds properly where you wax it heavily, and the whole thing can be renewed with a block of wax and a hairdryer twenty years later. The Gore-Tex jackets take the opposite approach. Keb GTX and the Bergtagen shells are sealed, taped and waterproof from the day you buy them, with no maintenance and no ambiguity — the choice for anyone who wants a jacket that simply works in Scottish weather without a project attached.

Warmth

Between the shells and the parkas sits the insulation, and Fjällräven splits it by how much bulk you'll tolerate. The Expedition X-Latt is the light end — synthetic fill in a jacket or hoodie that compresses small and works as a mid-layer under a shell or on its own in autumn. Greenland No. 1 Down and the Greenland Winter Jacket use down, which is warmer per gram and packs smaller but stops working properly when wet. At the far end, the Nuuk Lite Parka and Expedition Mid Winter are the pieces for standing still in cold rather than moving through it — longer, heavier, with hoods that actually cover your face when the wind turns.

The light stuff

Not every day needs a jacket that could survive a Swedish winter. The High Coast and Keb Lätt wind jackets weigh almost nothing and stuff into a pocket, which makes them the ones that actually get carried rather than the ones left at home. The Vardag Vindby and the Abisko Lite Trekking Jacket sit slightly above them, still light but with more structure. If you already own a warm jacket and a waterproof, a windshell is the piece that fills the gap between them.

Fjällräven Jackets FAQs

Not as they arrive. G-1000 is wind resistant and hard-wearing but the water resistance comes from Greenland Wax, which you apply yourself. Wax the shoulders and hood heavily and leave the rest lighter so the fabric breathes. If you want waterproof out of the box, the Keb GTX and Bergtagen shells are Gore-Tex.
Fabric. The standard Keb jacket is G-1000 with stretch panels, waxable, breathable and built for movement. The Keb GTX is Gore-Tex — fully waterproof, taped seams, no waxing needed. Keb for cold dry days and hard wear, Keb GTX for sustained rain.
The Nuuk Lite Parka and the Expedition Mid Winter Jacket, both cut long with substantial insulation. Greenland No. 1 Down is warmer for its weight but shorter. For most British winters, an Expedition X-Latt under a shell does more than a single heavy jacket.
Down is warmer per gram and packs smaller, but it collapses when wet and takes a long time to dry. Synthetic keeps some warmth damp and dries fast. For British weather and anything active, synthetic. For dry cold and travel where packed size matters, down.
Cutting wind without the weight, noise or heat of a waterproof. The High Coast and Keb Lätt pack into almost nothing, which means you'll actually carry one. They shed light drizzle but aren't waterproof — they're the layer between a jumper and a proper shell.
European sizing, cut with room to layer a fleece or an insulated mid-layer underneath. The shells run roomier than the wind jackets for that reason. Measurements are on each product page, and both shops hold Fjällräven if you'd rather try one on.
Yes. We stock Fjällräven at both Yards Store shops — 13 Old Bank Street in Manchester and 86 Pinstone Street in Sheffield. Ranges differ between the two, so call ahead if you're travelling for a particular jacket.
