Shirt jacs and overshirts

A shirt jac sits between a shirt and a jacket, and overshirt is the more common British word for the same thing. It uses shirt construction — buttons down the front, a collar, cuffs — but in a heavier cloth, with a straighter cut and enough room to go over a tee or a sweat. Carhartt WIP builds them in canvas, corduroy and brushed check. The Reno is the plainest, in garment-dyed cotton in Mirror, Barchan and Yosemite. The Reynold comes in leather rinsed canvas with chest pockets. The Cronyn and Derby carry check and rinsed finishes. None of them is a jacket in the weatherproof sense, but all four work as the outer layer through spring and autumn.

The lighter shirting

Below those sit the shirts proper. The Beale and Notus are striped, in gentle blue and bova bluebird. The Vaughn and Swenson are checks — Vaughn in opuntia, Swenson in park. The Lucas is bleached denim, the Kelsey is garment-dyed cotton, and the C-Logo and Madison are the plain button-downs. The Temple is the outlier: a short-sleeve knit rather than a woven shirt.

Garment dyed and rinsed

Carhartt WIP describes finish as much as colour on shirting. Garment dyed means the shirt was made up first and dyed afterwards, giving a softer, slightly uneven colour that settles further with washing — the Reno and Kelsey come this way. Rinsed has been washed once, so it holds its size from the start. Bleached, as on the Lucas, is the most worn-in of the three.
