The Detroit Jacket

The Detroit is the piece the brand is built on. Cotton duck canvas body, corduroy collar, blanket lining through the torso, quilted nylon in the sleeves, and a straight boxy cut that sits at the hip. It began as a work jacket for the trades and has changed very little since. Rigid means the canvas is untreated and will feel stiff for the first few weeks before it softens and starts to fade at the elbows and cuffs; rinsed has been washed already and gives less. Three versions here — Hamilton Brown with tobacco, and black in both rigid and rinsed.

Lighter layers and shells

Below the Detroit sit the unlined and lightly lined jackets. The Postal is a straight zip-through in canvas. The Bolan and Bolar are the sportier cuts, the Bolar in a sweat fabric with taped shoulders. The Rayler is a padded overshirt shape with patch pockets. The OG Active is the hooded canvas jacket with a drawcord hem, and the OG Double Front carries a second canvas layer across the front in a chalk wash. The Hooded Sail and Benford are the weatherproof options — nylon shells cut for rain rather than cold.

Winter weight

The Siberia Parka is the longest and warmest piece here, cut to mid-thigh with a lined hood. The Milter is the down jacket, in Highland and Tamarind, and the Clarton is the heavier canvas coat. For anything in between, a Detroit over a hooded sweat covers most of a British winter without the bulk.

Carhartt WIP's best-known jacket. A cotton duck canvas body with a corduroy collar, blanket lining through the torso and quilted lining in the sleeves, cut straight and boxy to the hip. It comes from the original workwear pattern and has barely changed.

Rigid canvas is untreated. It feels stiff at first, softens over a few weeks of wear and fades at the elbows, cuffs and hem. Rinsed has already been washed, so it starts softer, holds its size and fades more slowly.

The Siberia Parka for length and coverage, or the Milter for insulation in a shorter cut. The Detroit is warmer than it looks thanks to the blanket lining, but it's a three-season jacket rather than a winter one.

The Hooded Sail Jacket or the Benford. Both are nylon shells built to shed water. Duck canvas jackets such as the Detroit and OG Active handle a shower but are not waterproof.

Generously, and deliberately so — they are cut to layer over a sweat or a shirt. The Detroit and OG Active are boxy through the body with a straight hem. If you want a closer fit, taking your usual size rather than sizing up is normally enough.
