Tailored, regular and summer fit

Barbour cuts its shirts to three fits and the name is on every product. Tailored is the closest — trimmer through the chest and waist, with a shorter hem, meant to be worn tucked or untucked without excess fabric. Regular is the fuller cut, straighter through the body, and the one to take if you prefer room or plan to layer over a tee. Summer fit sits between the two in lighter cloths, used on the seersucker Cresswell and the striped Nelson, Faverdale and Deerpark. If you're unsure, the tailored shirts run closer than most high street equivalents.

Tartans, checks and the plainer cloths

Tartan is where Barbour shirting is most recognisable. The Lomond and Douglas carry Northshore, the Lanark comes in Riverstone and Blue Granite, the Dunoon in Midnight Oak and the Kyeloch in Green Loch. Alongside those sit the checks — Shieldton, Drumhill, Crossfell, Betsom, Newbridge and Bowburn — and the Ashfield in tattersall, a finer grid on a pale ground. For plainer shirting the Oxtown and Dunand are oxford cotton, the Ramsey and Bramside are corduroy, and the Nelson, Portland and Preston are the plain weaves.

Overshirts

Barbour's overshirts are cut heavier than the shirts and are meant as a light outer layer over a tee or a sweat. The Cord Collar Twill comes in beech and dark navy, the Tartan Trimmed Cord in navy, and the Willowburn is gingham. The Glendale, Lenker and Endurance ripstop are the plainer options, and the Crail is waxed ripstop — the one that shrugs off a shower rather than just wind. All of them sit closer to a jacket than a shirt in weight.

Cool wash at 30°C, inside out, and hang to dry rather than tumbling. Corduroy and flannel shirts hold their nap better if you avoid the dryer entirely. Waxed overshirts should never go in a washing machine — wipe them down with cold water and re-wax when the finish dulls.
