About Paul Smith
Paul Smith opened a three-metre-square shop in Nottingham in 1970, open two days a week, and built one of the few genuinely international British menswear labels out of it. The approach has not changed much: classic shapes with something unexpected in them, usually colour. The multicoloured signature stripe is the shorthand, and it turns up on everything here from socks to towels.
What that means practically is that a Paul Smith piece works in places a louder brand would not. A striped sock under a suit, a lining nobody sees, a plain navy jumper with one thing off about it. It is why the brand sells as heavily in socks and underwear as it does in tailoring.
Paul Smith socks, underwear and loungewear
This is the largest part of the range and the reason most people buy the brand for the first time. The socks run from the signature stripe multipacks through Hudson check, Norwich check, cable knits and the odd-sock pairs where the two do not match. Underwear is mostly boxer briefs and trunks in three, five and seven packs, and the loungewear covers jersey shorts and pants, waffle hoodies, dressing gowns and pyjama bottoms.
Worth knowing on the multipacks: the mixed packs give you one plain and two patterned rather than three of the same, which is generally the better buy if you are trying the brand out.
Paul Smith shoes, trainers and clothing
The Buster is the shoe with the strongest following — a suede derby that turns up on more feet than any other Paul Smith style. The Rex and Dover are the trainers, the Bolzano is the loafer, and the Amos and Lee cover the plainer end. On the clothing side the range runs to graphic and logo T-shirts, polos, overshirts, jeans and blousons.
Paul Smith scarves, gloves, wallets and homeware
The accessories are where the stripe does most of its work. Scarves in merino, lambswool and cashmere blends, leather and wool gloves, card holders and wallets, belts, caps and bucket hats. Beyond that there are mugs, towels, notebooks and umbrellas — the pieces people buy as gifts, and the reason the brand shows up at Christmas in a way most menswear labels do not.
