Norwegian wool since 1853

Ole Andreas Devold was twenty when he travelled to Germany to learn textile manufacturing. He came back to Ålesund with a knitting machine and four hand looms, and started making hats, mittens, underwear and work clothes for the fishermen and labourers of the west coast. That was 1853. In 1868 he moved production to Langevåg and built one of Norway's first hydroelectric power stations to run it — the weaving mill had electric light four years after Edison invented the bulb. By the end of the century Devold wool was going on polar expeditions: Fridtjof Nansen crossed Greenland in 1888 wearing it, which is where the Nansen sock in this collection gets its name.

Base layers, tees and outer layers

The Breeze Merino 150 range is the lightest weight here — zip neck, long-sleeve shirt and t-shirts — built to move moisture and hold temperature under a jacket or worn on its own. The Classic, Active and Archive tees take merino in a more everyday direction, in plain shapes for regular wear. Above those sit the Explorer Merino Vest for warmth without bulk, the Explorer Merino Jacket, and the Adventure Jacket for colder and more active days.

Which socks for which use

Four sock ranges, and they do different jobs. Nansen is the thick ribbed wool sock, the warmest and the cheapest way into the brand. Adventure Merino Medium is cushioned and built for walking and long days on your feet. Archive Merino is the everyday option, thinner, with the striped ribbed look. Choose by how long you'll be wearing them and how much cushioning you want underfoot.

A Norwegian wool company founded in 1853 by Ole Andreas Devold in Ålesund, on the west coast of Norway. It began making underwear, mittens and work clothes for fishermen and labourers, and by the late nineteenth century was supplying polar expeditions.

Merino fibres are much finer than standard wool, which is why merino base layers can sit against the skin without the prickle people associate with heavier wool jumpers. The lighter Breeze Merino 150 pieces are the softest here; the Nansen sock is a thicker, more traditional wool.
A cool wash at 30°C on a wool or delicate cycle, with wool detergent rather than fabric softener. Don't tumble dry — reshape and dry flat. Merino resists odour well, so airing between wears often does the job instead of washing. Always check the garment label first.
