Bedale, Beaufort, Border: what's the difference

The three classic wax jackets are the same idea at three lengths. The Bedale is the shortest, cut to the hip, originally for riding — twin bellows pockets, a corduroy collar and a two-way zip. The Beaufort is a few inches longer with a game pocket across the back, designed for shooting and the one most people picture as a Barbour. The Border is longer still, past the hip, and the warmest of the three. All three take a zip-in liner. If you're choosing between them, it comes down to how much coverage you want and whether you'll wear it over a suit.

Wax, quilt and showerproof

Waxed cotton is the traditional finish — water-resistant rather than waterproof, and it needs re-waxing every year or two as the coating wears at the cuffs and shoulders. The Prestbury, Ashby, Corbridge, Editor, Durham, Sapper and Modern Bedale all use it in different weights. Quilted jackets are the lighter option: the Liddesdale is the thin diamond quilt worn as a mid-layer or on its own in autumn, and the Chelsea Sportsquilt, Shoveler and Benton add more insulation. For rain proper, the Westoe, Berwick, Kirkhill, Swinton, Domus and Farlam are showerproof or waterproof membranes rather than wax — they'll take a downpour without maintenance.

The casual and tailored end

Not everything here is countryside. The Beacon Sports Jacket is cut like a blazer in waxed cotton — the one worn in Skyfall, and the most tailored jacket Barbour makes. The Icons Bedale and Endurance jackets take the classic patterns into lighter, unwaxed fabrics. The Tyneside, Fatigue, Tracker and Sanderling are plain casual jackets, and the Kirkbridge is a wool coat. The Beaconsfield is tweed check.

Water-resistant rather than waterproof. The wax makes rain bead and run off, and a wax jacket will keep you dry through most British weather, but it isn't a sealed membrane. If you want something guaranteed in a downpour without maintenance, the showerproof and waterproof jackets are the better choice.
Every year or two with regular wear, and sooner if the cuffs, elbows and shoulders start looking dry or pale. You can do it yourself with a tin of Barbour wax and a hairdryer, or send the jacket to Barbour's South Shields factory, which runs a re-waxing service.
No. A washing machine strips the wax and ruins the jacket. Wipe it down with cold water and a sponge, never use detergent or hot water, and hang it to dry away from direct heat.
