G-1000, and why it isn't waterproof

Most of these trousers are cut from G-1000, the polyester-cotton weave Fjällräven developed in 1968. It arrives wind resistant and hard-wearing but not waterproof, which is deliberate — you add the weather resistance yourself with Greenland Wax, rubbing a block of paraffin and beeswax into the fabric and melting it in with a hairdryer. Wax the knees, seat and thighs heavily and leave the rest breathing. It wears off with use, you reapply, and the trousers outlast almost anything you'd buy instead.

Choosing the range

The names tell you what the trousers are for. Vidda Pro and Barents Pro are the heavy trekking cuts, reinforced at the knee and seat, with the ventilated versions adding thigh zips for warm weather. Keb is the technical middle ground, mixing G-1000 with stretch panels where you bend. Abisko is the lighter walking range in Hike, Trail Stretch and Hybrid versions, cut slimmer and quicker to dry. At the other end, Vardag and Nils are the everyday chinos and the Övik jeans are the only denim in the range — both of which happen to be G-1000 too.

Leg lengths

Fjällräven is unusual in selling most technical trousers in short, regular and long leg, which is worth taking advantage of — a walking trouser that pools over the boot is a nuisance rather than an inconvenience. Sizing is European, and the fits run true with room to layer a baselayer underneath in winter. Each product page lists the leg length in the title.

Vidda Pro is the heavier of the two — full G-1000 with reinforced knees and seat, built for rough ground and durability. Keb mixes G-1000 with stretch panels at the knee and behind the thigh, so it moves more freely and weighs less. Vidda Pro for hard wear, Keb for anything where you're climbing or scrambling.
Not to be usable, but yes if you want water resistance. G-1000 comes wind resistant and hard-wearing but not waterproof. Greenland Wax adds that, and you control how much — heavy on the knees and seat, lighter elsewhere so the fabric still breathes.
Zips along the thighs that open for airflow. The Vidda Pro Ventilated is the main example — the same heavy trekking trouser, but usable in warm weather when a full G-1000 leg would be too hot.
Vardag or Nils. Both are cut as chinos rather than technical trousers, without the reinforced panels and utility pockets, and they work in town as easily as on a path. The Övik jeans are the denim equivalent.
Short, regular and long on most technical styles, stated in the product title. It's worth choosing properly — Fjällräven cuts the regular leg longer than many UK brands, which is why the short exists.
