Why a workwear brand makes homeware

Carhartt WIP has always worked outwards from clothing into the things around it. Since taking the licence to manufacture outside the United States in 1996, it has produced enamel mugs, incense, blankets, ice cube trays, camping furniture, dog beds and speakers alongside the jackets and trousers. The connection is the audience rather than the category — record shops, studios and skate shops were the brand's early home, and the objects follow from that. Graphics that appear on a t-shirt one season turn up on a deck or a ceramic the next.

Boards as wall pieces

A skate deck is a graphic on a shaped wooden panel, which is why so many end up mounted rather than ridden. The Emerge boards come in purple, green and blue across 8.25, 8.375 and 8.5 inch widths — the width changes the proportions on a wall as much as it changes anything underfoot. Hung as a set of three or singly above a desk or shelf, they sit somewhere between a print and an object. Wall mounts are sold separately by most skate shops and take a few minutes to fit.
