Gramicci and And Wander, and what each brings

And Wander was started in Tokyo in 2011 by Keita Ikeuchi and Mihoko Mori, who had both been designers at Issey Miyake and could not find outdoor clothing they wanted to wear themselves. The name is the point of it — wandering on foot rather than chasing summits — and the clothes are cut for a weekend in the hills that carries on into Monday. Gramicci comes at the same problem from the opposite direction, having started with climbers who needed to move and worked outwards from there. Both have been designed in Japan for years now, which is why the collaboration reads as a conversation rather than a logo swap.

What the Gramicci collaboration changes

Gramicci's construction generally survives it. The gusset and the one-handed webbing belt carry across to the trousers and shorts when they appear, and the fit tends to stay closer to Gramicci's than to And Wander's slimmer mountain cuts. What changes is the material and the detailing: ripstop and taffeta nylons in place of cotton twill, contrast panels and patchwork where mainline Gramicci would leave a plain field, and colour that is more considered than the parent range usually bothers with. The pieces are made for a season and not repeated, so a colourway that has gone has gone.

Gramicci x And Wander FAQs

A Japanese outdoor label founded in Tokyo in 2011 by Keita Ikeuchi and Mihoko Mori, who had both worked as designers at Issey Miyake. They started it because they could not find outdoor clothing they wanted to buy themselves. The name refers to wandering on foot rather than climbing for summits, and the clothes are built around that idea — properly made for the hills, but not out of place off them.
The construction stays Gramicci's — the crotch gusset and the built-in webbing belt appear on the trousers and shorts as they do across the main range. What changes is the material and the finish: ripstop and taffeta nylons rather than cotton twill, panelling and patchwork detail, and a more restrained colour palette. It sits at a higher price than mainline Gramicci as a result.
Not the individual pieces. Gramicci and And Wander have worked together across several seasons, so new drops appear, but each one is made for its season and not repeated. A colourway that has sold through will not be restocked.
