Örnsköldsvik, 1960

Åke Nordin was fourteen when he built his first rucksack in his parents' basement in Örnsköldsvik, northern Sweden — a wooden frame that carried the weight on his hips rather than his shoulders. He founded Fjällräven in 1960 and the company still operates on the same idea: equipment built for cold, wet, difficult conditions, made to last long enough that buying twice is the exception. The name means arctic fox, which is the animal on the logo, and the company holds a royal warrant from the King of Sweden.

G-1000 and Greenland Wax

G-1000 is the fabric most of the range is built from — a tight weave of polyester and cotton, developed in 1968 for a Greenland expedition. It isn't waterproof out of the box, and that's deliberate. You wax it yourself with Greenland Wax, a block of paraffin and beeswax rubbed into the fabric and melted in with heat, and the more you apply the more weather resistance you get. Wax the shoulders and thighs heavily for rain, leave the rest for breathability. It wears off and you reapply, which is why a twenty-year-old Fjällräven jacket can still be working.

Fjällräven's own fabric, developed in 1968 — a densely woven blend of polyester and cotton. It's hard-wearing and wind resistant on its own, and becomes more water resistant when treated with Greenland Wax. It comes in several weights, from the lightweight Lite to the heavier Original and Eco.
Rub the Greenland Wax block over the fabric, then melt it in with a hairdryer or an iron on a low setting until the surface darkens slightly. Apply more to the shoulders, thighs and anywhere else that takes the weather, and less where you want breathability. Reapply when water stops beading.
Fjällräven uses European sizing, and trousers are sold in short, regular and long leg lengths on most technical styles. Cuts are generally roomy enough to layer. Measurements are on each product page.
