Patagonia: Better Than Most

A brand that needs no introduction, Patagonia started life as Chouinard Equipment in 1965. They began building, re-designing, and improving every climbing tool imaginable to make them stronger, lighter, and better. Fast forward slightly to 1970, Yvon Chouinard went on a winter climbing trip to Scotland, where he bought some rugged rugby shirts and decided to take some back to sell to his climber-obsessed customers. He couldn’t restock them fast enough, and the idea of his company soon became more apparel led. The company was renamed Patagonia in 1989, and the rest, as they say, is history. Through the next three decades Patagonia built some of the best and most iconic outdoor clothing on the market, from the Retro X Pile Fleece/Vest to the Nano Puff range and the Down Sweater, to the humble P-6 Logo Responsibili-Tee and unbelievably good Black Hole bag collection – they simply have product for everyone and anything.

Patagonia say they’re on a mission to save our home planet and want everyone to get involved. The values of the brand reflect those of a business started by a band of climbers and surfers, and the minimalist style they promoted. Their mission statement reads; Build the best product, cause no unnecessary harm, use business to protect nature and to be not bound by convention.

Since 1985, Patagonia have pledged 1% of sales to the preservation and restoration of the natural environment. The 1% for the Planet is an alliance of businesses that understand the necessity of protecting the natural environment. They understand that profit and loss are directly linked to its health and are concerned with the social and environmental impacts of industry. A brand that’s very much epitomized by what it means to be purpose-driven, Patagonia have always been at the forefront of sustainability and pushing environmental activism, and this quote from them perfectly sums up their core beliefs – “A love of wild and beautiful places demands participation in the fight to save them.”
